Courage...Where Does Courage Come From?

I’ve been thinking about courage a lot lately.  Courage makes some of our most profound character and life defining moments possible.  Integrity, compassion, creativity, and love are just some of the many aspirations that are impossible to fully realize without courage...

What Experience Will I Choose Today?

We can’t control the weather, the people we work with, the neighbor’s dog that barks at 4am, etc.  The world we live in throws all kinds of circumstances at us that will happen whether we like it or not.  The big question is… how do we handle everything lobbed our way?  How will we choose to experience the world?...

We Need To Take Ourselves More Seriously! Take 2... How?

They won’t let me… It doesn’t work in our culture… There’s enough on my list for 5 people… My leader is a workaholic… My customers/clients/family/community/organization expect this.  Have you thought or said any of these things?  I know I have...

We Need To Take Ourselves More Seriously!

Rushing around, meeting deadlines, answering an email and a phone call at the same time… sound familiar?  There are so many distractions we face, so many demands on our time, and so many things on our to-do lists.  Sometimes it’s hard to get a moment to use the restroom!...

I'm Lost :: Lessons Learned From The Road

What do you think about when you’re driving?  My family and I recently returned home from a long journey… 4,500 miles of driving over seven weeks.  As we drove the last leg, I thought about the experiences we had on the road during our journey.  Some of the driving was scenic, beautiful, and easy without much traffic. Other times driving was challenging… road construction, detours, closed exits, lots of traffic, etc.  As I looked at the road in front of us and the cars around us, I thought about driving and analogies to life… what follows are a few…

How To Turn Uncertainty Into Power, Not Paralysis

Uncertainty… what does it mean to you?  For many it’s incredibly scary.  For many it impedes progress, stops us in our tracks, and prevents us from opening new doors.  But does it have to be this way?  Could we change the game and use all that energy to fuel us instead of paralyzing us?

The Journey To Meditate... How I Stopped Thinking For a Few Minutes

Every minute counts… right?  We need to be as productive as possible and not waste any time!  If we buy in to this, logically it follows that we need to keep our minds actively thinking all the time… producing.  For much of my life, I embraced this mindset and used my brain every moment of every day and night… even when I was sleeping… including dreams I’ve had about complex problems I was trying to solve!  Sound familiar??...

5 Actions To Make Someday Today

How many times do you find yourself “looking forward to ______”?  Maybe it’s the weekend, a trip, or something simple like sleep.  Taking it a step further, do you fanaticize about retirement?  Do you feel that all of life’s work is rewarded when you hit a certain age?  Is retirement when you feel life enjoyment can really start?...

Money... Partner Or Foe?

Everyone’s favorite topic, right?  In the months before I left Deloitte, I got a lot of questions and comments about money.  The conversations never started with money, but somehow migrated to questions like… How could I afford to leave?  How much money does a person need to have saved to take the leap?  How do I think I’ll make money going forward?...

I Dream Of Writing Skits For SNL... Public Accounting Fits Perfectly In This Picture, Right?

Do you allow yourself to dream?  Do you have dreams that seem so different from the life you lead that you can’t fathom making them real? Do you ever think back to what you imagined at age 23?  If you are 23, are you struggling with how to be financially independent and “responsible” without “selling out” your dreams?

What Do I Really Do? Dropping The Title Reveals A Lot!

For many years when people asked me what I do I’d say something like “I’m a tax consultant” or “I’m a tax partner at Deloitte”.  It was terrifying to drop these labels/titles… how would I answer the “what do I do question”?  However, when I stopped thinking about what I do in terms of my title, status, and specific career label, I found that I have a lot to say!

What Do I Want My Life To Look Like? Crafting The Visions For Our Lives.

As I opened my mind and started to explore, I thought more and more about what I want my life to look like.  Since I was focused on transforming my life, not just my next career move, I was free to think… I could look at the big picture.  I figured that if I’m going to transform, I’m going to get the absolute best out of myself and craft the life I dream of!

How Did I Get Here?

Making the decision to transform my career wasn’t quick or lightly taken.  Though I’ve always had a thought in the very back of my mind that at some point I’d do something different, it took me 18 months to get from a feeling that it’s time to change, to today when I’m making the change.  The first 9 months of which I spent weighing whether or not I should leap…

I jumped off the cliff... where's my parachute??

Of course this is figuratively speaking, but in career terms “jumping off the cliff” is the best description I can come up with.  I spent the last 18 years in big firm public accounting, the last 7 as a partner at Deloitte.  5/28/16, was my last day… I left to pursue my purpose and to challenge myself to find and live the life of my dreams every day...
